Balik Kampung
Balik Kampung or BK as we call, it is the foundational programme at GUI. We know of no better way to help people to understand what the basics of life involve, and why we have so much to be grateful for. Volunteers often speak of having their eyes opened by the experience. While many of us are humbled by our ignorance of the very food we eat, many are as thrilled to be awakened to the "secrets" and activities that were once everyday knowledge and tasks.
BK comprises of several components:
General farming tasks: weeding, tilling, planting, pruning.
Composting: GUI practices several forms of composting to create awareness of the need to reduce waste and recycle where possible. Starbuck and GUI are partners in this initiative.
Maintenance of the eco-terraces and the SUrF site.
Volunteers who return often enough will get to experience every aspect of BK has to offer.Experienced volunteers and members go on to volunteer in other GUI activities and programmes.
SUrF (Sustainable Urban Farms) SUrf is a GUI initiative for sustainable community gardens that started at bottle tree park. SUrF hopes to:
Inspire urban dwellers to the possibility and pleasures of growing food plants and bringing new life and use to overlooked spaces in homes and offices.
Demonstrate how urban dwellers can do this in a healthy, sustainable manner, year after year.3. Encourage people to come together for eco-aware gardens.
Empower communities with knowledge and support for SUrF gardens in their neighbourhoods.c Gardens for food? Why not? Singapore is a garden city. Urban Farming simply takes garden city living to the next level, with urban food gardens adding diversity and fostering community spirit adding new dimensions to Singapore's global green image. What's more, it raises awareness about urban food security and shows people what could be possible.
